He holds a bachelor of Arts (Hons 1) and a master of Philosophy (MPHIL) from the department of Chinese literature at the University of Hong Kong and a PhD from the Australian National University.  

He teaches in the department of Chinese Literature at the National University of Singapore, where he has served as assistant Dean of The Faculty of Arts, director of the Centre for Sinology Studies and head of the department of Chinese Studies. He is currently director of the Chinese Studies Minor programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.  

His research fields are Chinese thought, culture, Ming Dynasty history, East Asian Confucianism, Chinese religion and folklore.  

His books include “Scattered Commentaries on The History of The Ming Dynasty”, “Commentaries on the History of the Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty”, “Confucianism Tradition and Ideological Changes”, “A Brief Introduction to Taoism”, and “Autobiography of Qiujun”.
